La Ruche
The Lincoln - Manchester

Why is Manchester synonymous with bees?

The Manchester worker bee is one of the best-known symbols of Manchester and has been an emblem for the city for over 150 years. The bee denotes Mancunians’ hard work ethic and the city's hive of activity. It has also come to represent the sense of unity in our great city.

Manchester adopted the bee as its symbol, not just for its individual industriousness, but for its collective strength. Just as bees, individually insignificant, form a superorganism, we, the people of Manchester, are stronger when we stand together. And like bees, we are truly amazing; our unity is jaw-droppingly stunning.

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are the only insects that have been domesticated and have been since at least the days of the ancient Egyptians.

Jars of honey were found in the tomb of Tutankhamun.
