Le Lion Rouge
Forbury Place - Reading

Why is Reading synonymous with a lion?

Following the tragic events in Forbury Gardens, the Maiwand Lion—or, as many people fondly know it, the Forbury Lion—has been adopted as a symbol of unity.

The lion was placed in the memory of soldiers who had died in 1880 fighting for their country, and recently, within its shadow, sadly, three more people have lost their lives.

But the lion quickly became not only a monument but a symbol of Reading found amongst a sea of flowers left by mourners paying their respects to those who were killed.

A handwritten note outside Forbury Gardens read:

“Reading weeps. But Reading roars with diversity, culture and community. We roar like the lion at the heart of this beautiful park.”

Let’s get involved Reading…

Get ready for an epic summer at Forbury Place because we've got an amazing event lineup coming your way! Inspired by the Paris Olympics, we're bringing you a range of super fun activities and competitions. And that's not all – we're even creating a cool new pub called Le Lion Rouge (red lion) you won't want to miss!

One of the most thrilling events is the 'Pub Pentathlon', where we're looking for teams from each company at Forbury Place to join in the fun. You can have as many people on your team as you like, and guess what? You can play multiple times! The top five scores will count towards your tally, so everyone's got a chance to shine.

But wait, there's more! You'll need to nominate a team captain to be the liaison with the 'Pub Landlord' and event manager. This could be your time to shine and lead your company to victory! There will be exclusive events, awesome prizes, and even the chance to win the title of Champion Captain. It's going to be a summer full of fun and friendly competition – are you in?

Let's make this summer one to remember!
